Cutting what is already there
Cutting is the opposite trade to pouring. The concrete exists, it is holding something up, and there is steel and often a live line inside it that nobody has looked at since the day it was placed. So this work starts with a scan and a chalk line rather than with a saw. What the scan reads decides where the opening lands, and a doorway shifted 8 inches along a wall to miss a column of dowels is a cheaper morning than one cut straight through them.
Two kinds of call come in here. One is a remodel out in Rubidoux, Glen Avon or Pedley, where a shower drain or a new door has to pass through concrete placed under county rules long before the city existed. The other is a tenant in the Mira Loma distribution corridor wanting a dock opening or a service trench in a floor that has pallets moving over it the same week. Both are cut around the building, not the other way round.
Cutting is done under a CSLB C-8 concrete license with liability insurance on every job, held by Daniel Reyes since 2025. A trench across a floor slab or a core for a waste line usually files nothing, confirmed at the counter. An opening through a bearing stem wall or a braced panel is structural: it is drawn, filed and inspected by the Building and Safety Department first. The finished opening carries a written workmanship guarantee against defects in how it was built.
When a saw is the answer
A relocated shower, a floor drain or a conduit run means getting under a slab that is staying. Two parallel cuts about 24 inches apart lift a strip out and leave the rest untouched, where a breaker starts a crack that wanders off across the room and never stops at the trench.
Older houses out here sit on a perimeter stem wall, and knocking two rooms together or letting a slab addition through means an opening in it. Cut square with a wall saw, the jamb is a straight face ready to be framed, and the load above it goes onto a header rather than onto rubble.
Where a single bay of a floor or a drive has broken up, the replacement is only as good as the joint it meets. Sawing the failure out on the joint lines gives the new pour a square vertical edge to bear against, so the two slabs move together instead of stepping apart in a year.
A core drill takes a clean cylinder out for a drain, a sleeve, a post or a bollard, in a diameter chosen before it starts. Chipping the same hole with a breaker leaves a ragged cone the pipe cannot seal into, and it hammers a slab that has to keep working afterward.
What's included
Standard on every opening, with nothing added later. Each of the eight answers something that only applies to concrete already in service: it is carrying load, it has steel and services in it, and the building around it has to go on being used.
The line is scanned for rebar, conduit and post-tension cable, and moved if what is under it is worth missing.
The opening is chalked at full size and walked with you, so what comes out is agreed before anything is cut.
Water on the blade holds the silica dust down and keeps the diamond segments cool, so the cut runs true to the line.
Wet cutting makes a caustic slurry. It is vacuumed at the blade, held, and taken away rather than washed into a drain.
Rebar in the line is cut through by the blade, so the bar leaves a flush end instead of tearing concrete out with it.
The face is cut plumb the whole way down, giving a new pour or a new frame a true edge to bear on.
Anything cut out overhead or in a wall is supported and lowered, never dropped onto the floor it is standing over.
Spoil out, edges cleaned off and the floor swept, so the next trade starts on the opening the same day.

A sawn face can be poured or framed straight against. A broken one has to be trimmed back to sound concrete first, which is work nobody quotes for.
Local knowledge
The work splits by address here, and the two halves have almost nothing in common except the blade on the saw.
Mira Loma is one of the biggest distribution corridors in the region, and the floors inside those buildings are 6 to 8 inches thick, reinforced and never idle. A tenant fitting out takes a dock opening through a tilt-up panel, a trench for drainage to a new wash bay, or cores through the slab for racking anchors and conduit. That work is planned around shifts and cut wet in sections, because the aisle either side of the cut is still carrying pallets on the Monday.
The other half is domestic and much older. Rubidoux, Glen Avon and Pedley were subdivided under Riverside County long before the city was formed in 2011, and their houses are being remodelled now: a bathroom moved, two rooms opened into one, a shop wired at the back of the lot. Both start with a scan, because a slab poured in 1968 has its plumbing cast into it and no drawing survives that says where.

Blade and water together, cut in pieces small enough to be lifted rather than dropped, with the slurry vacuumed as it is made.

What moves the estimate
Cutting is priced by the inch of depth and the foot of line, not by the square foot of floor. What moves it past that is what the blade meets on the way through, and how much of the building has to be protected while it does.
A 4-inch house slab is one pass. Eight inches of reinforced warehouse floor is several, and heavy steel slows every one of them.
An opening in a bearing stem wall needs props, a header detail and an inspection. A non-bearing panel needs none of the three.
A floor a saw drives onto is quick. A cut in a back bedroom or up a slope is hand saws, hose runs and carrying every section out.
Covering a finished interior, containing the slurry and hauling it off is real time, and a tenant who can only stop at night adds more.

Water at the cut turns the dust into slurry before it can lift, which is also how respirable silica is controlled on site, and a vacuum takes it off the floor as it is made. Doorways are sheeted and the route out is covered. Dry cutting fills a house with dust in minutes and we do not do it indoors.
It is collected and taken away. Slurry is water carrying cement fines, which makes it strongly alkaline, so it sets hard in a trap and is not something to send down a yard drain or out to the street. We vacuum it at the blade, hold it in a drum, let the solids settle out and haul it off with the rest of the spoil rather than leaving a gray stain across your driveway.
A walk-behind flat saw reaches about 12 inches, which covers any floor slab or paving you are likely to have, and a wall saw on its track goes through about 24 inches of wall. Core bits have no depth limit worth naming and run from about 1 inch to 24 inches across. Anything thicker is cut from both faces and met in the middle.
Yes, and it is the reason to saw rather than break. A sawn face is plumb and sound the whole way down, so the new slab bears on it evenly and dowels can be drilled into it on a straight line. A broken edge is feathered and cracked back several inches, and anything poured against it starts life sitting on concrete that is already failing.
