How a Jurupa Valley Garage Floor Is Poured

Half the floors we take out in this city are not in houses at all, and an outbuilding floor carries weight a spare room never sees: a one-ton truck, a boat on its trailer, a pallet of tile stacked where the mixer left it. What holds that up is depth, steel and a base compacted in layers, all of it decided before the mixer is booked. None of the three can be added to a floor afterwards, which is why the concrete is the last part of this job rather than the first.

Behind the work is a crew that has poured on this ground since 2025. Daniel Reyes came to it after 12 years finishing flatwork across the Inland Empire, and he is in the building for the screed and the trowel on every floor. The buildings themselves split two ways here: detached garages, shops and equipment barns standing at the back of the older lots in Rubidoux, Pedley and Glen Avon, and attached three-car bays on the newer tracts off Limonite and Van Buren.

A dip where the truck parks

Park in the same spot for twenty years on a slab over loose river sand and the concrete follows the ground down. It shows first as a puddle that will not sweep out, then as a lip at the joint where one panel has dropped below its neighbor. Nothing laid on top brings that level back.

Edges breaking off at the walls

An outbuilding floor poured flush to its walls with no thickened edge beneath them has nothing carrying load at its perimeter. The concrete flakes away in curved pieces where a wheel crosses, the sill plate loses its bearing, and the opening spreads until the door binds in its track.

Under 4 inches at a break

Put a tape on the concrete at any crack. Plenty of the pre-2011 outbuildings here measure 3 inches or less, laid straight on graded dirt with no mesh in them. Three inches holds a car and nothing heavier, so the first loaded trailer to stand on it starts a crack that keeps running.

Water standing at the back wall

Hose the floor out and watch where the water goes. A slab that pools at the back instead of running to the opening was built flat or has settled that way, and the water then wicks into the bottom plate, the drywall and whatever is stacked against it all winter.

Jurupa Valley only became a city in 2011.   • Can a new floor be poured over the old one?

    Not over a slab that has settled, measures under 4 inches or was laid with no barrier beneath it. A bonded topping inherits whatever it is stuck to, so the crack underneath prints through inside a season. It also raises the surface, putting the roll-up door and the fall out to the drive at the wrong height. Where the old concrete really is sound, saw cutting a joint grid into it costs less.

  • What happens to the water heater and the laundry?

    They come off the floor and go back on it, and that is trade time either side of the pour rather than concrete time. A water heater in a garage stands on an 18-inch platform, which we form and cast as part of the new slab instead of stacking one on top afterwards. Anything plumbed or wired is disconnected and reconnected by that trade, and the estimate names who is doing it before you sign.
