How a deck is built here
On a lot this size the deck is most of what people actually stand on, and out here it is chosen for the afternoon before it is chosen for anything else. Air in the mid-90s through July and August puts a dark, film-sealed slab far above that, and a surround nobody will cross at four is a pool that only gets used at seven. Color and face are poured in rather than added later, so that decision belongs at the estimate.

The pour is made to the California Residential Code, under a CSLB C-8 concrete license and behind liability insurance on every job. The concrete itself is flatwork on your own ground, but the pool barrier is not: a deck that shifts a fence line, changes a gate or alters the level either stands at is checked with the City of Jurupa Valley Building and Safety Department before a date is set. Every deck leaves with a written workmanship guarantee against defects in how it was built.
Warning signs
A meter held over a dark, film-sealed surround at four in the afternoon comes back near 140 degrees while the air is at 95, and nothing laid on top of it brings that down for a season. Color and texture live in the concrete, so the answer is the slab and not another coat.
Run a bar along the outside edge of the deck and listen for where the note changes. River sand and cobble drains fast but carries soft pockets, and where one has washed out the slab rings hollow long before it cracks. Grout pumped into that void buys a summer at most.
A self-closing gate that has to be lifted onto its latch is usually the slab under the post moving rather than the hinge wearing. Around a pool that gate is the barrier, and it is the thing an inspector and an insurer both look at. Packing the post is not a repair.
Hose the deck at five and walk it an hour later. Anywhere still holding water has lost the quarter inch of fall per foot it was poured with, and on this ground that dip is sitting over a pocket that has not finished settling. A winter storm deepens it further.

A stamped face under a gloss film is the warmest thing we lay, which is why it belongs on a shaded patio here and not around a pool.
Local knowledge
Two things decide a surround on this side of the river, and the pool is neither of them: how hot the surface is by four, and what the river left underneath it.
Heat comes first, because it settles the concrete rather than the furniture. The city sits in the mid-90s through July and August, and these decks sit open with the house too far back to throw shade over them before evening. So the color goes pale and integral instead of dark and stamped, and the face is broomed or salted so it stays rough enough for a wet foot. Both are in the slab from the morning it is poured, which is why they are agreed in writing at the estimate.
The ground is the other half. Through the Rubidoux flats it is Santa Ana River sand and rounded cobble, which takes a winter storm away quickly and spares a deck the heave the older terraces above the river get. What it hides is soft pockets - old channel fill, and spoil pushed back around the shell the week the pool was dug - which take water and let go under an edge. We probe beside the shell before quoting. Where a deck runs into an existing patio, the two are jointed, not tied.

What moves the estimate
Area moves the figure furthest, and out here that area is bigger than people expect: a surround with a furniture end and a run back to the house often measures 600 to 900 square feet. Every estimate is measured and written on site.
A 4-foot walk-round is one job. A deck taking a table, loungers and a path back to the door is two or three times that area.
Soft pockets beside the shell are dug out and made up compacted, and that spoil leaves by truck rather than being spread over the lot.
On a deep lot the truck stops at the road, so a pour is a barrow run or a line pump over the house, and that sets the crew for the day.
Broom is the baseline. A salt or aggregate face wants more finishers on the slab inside the window before it goes off, so the morning is longer.

No, not on the working days. The water is sheeted from the first breaker so no rubble or base dust reaches it, and the pump and filter run underneath the whole time so the chemistry holds. The sheeting comes off once the new deck has been rinsed down, and swimming resumes then. Give the concrete 7 days before the furniture goes back on it.
